Heritage locos were sold for preservation after many years of intensive use on the mainline. The condition of the locos when withdrawn varied from fully working to failed with major defects requiring repair or parts missing. Even after initial restoration for use on preserved railways and several years of careful running, locos are now suffering from corrosion and long term deterioration of mechanical and electrical parts.
Restoration & Repairs
We have carried out full restoration and repair work on our own preserved locos and more recently on locos owned by other groups and private owners. We have built up detailed knowledge of the causes of deterioration and problems, and developed techniques to restore these locos and give them a second lease of life.
Pioneer Diesels can offer a one-stop shop for complete restoration and rebuild of heritage locos, bodywork repairs and repaint or specialist repairs of components.
Working Methods
We are able to work independently or in conjunction with the owner’s volunteers. As we are fully mobile, we can set up to work at the owner’s location, saving costs of moving the loco to another repair location. In fact minimising costs to the owner is a feature of our service, through weekly reports of progress and a flexible approach to planning the work to suit the owner’s needs.
