The owners of loco 45125 at Great Central Railway, Loughborough contacted us after it suffered a sudden failure of the gear drive, and we quickly organised a repair programme to crane out the engine on site and fit new gears from a spare engine. The pump was found to be undamaged, and was reattached to the engine with the replacement gears. The running clearances between the gears and pump had to be carefully measured and adjusted using taper dowel pins.
While the engine was out, the opportunity was take to clean years of grime from the engine room, replate the corroded floor and repaint the whole area. The corroded roof for the engine silencer was also replated before refitting.
The repaired engine was back in the loco and running again only 2 months after its removal, just in time for the owner to hire the loco out for some commercial work on the railway.
